October
The month everyone agrees about. October is cool, dry, and briefly spectacular — two weeks of colour, a lot of driving to look at it, and the particular pleasure of a house that is warm because you made it warm.

In Season
What the month is made ofAt the market
Apples at their peak, pears, squash of every shape, and the last of the greens before frost. Cider from a press, not a carton, is worth the detour.
The light
Low, warm, and short. The clocks have not changed yet, so the evenings shorten fast and each one feels more valuable than the last.
Outside
The best walking weather of the year. Leaf season peaks north to south across about five weeks; find where it is and go.
The rituals
Apple picking, the fire pit, the first real fire in the house, and Halloween — the only holiday that belongs entirely to the street.
What to Wear Now
The month everything in the closet worksFlannel, honestly
October is the month it is not a costume. Wear it.
A jacket, not a coat
Waxed cotton or wool. Warm at seven, fine at noon.
Boots, back out
Wet leaves, cold mornings. They live by the door again from now on.
