Month 11 · Late Autumn

November

The clocks go back and the country moves indoors. November is the month of the early dark — dinner in lamplight at five-thirty, a long cooking holiday at the end, and a general agreement that the year is now something to be got through rather than seized.

In Season

What the month is made of

At the market

Roots, brassicas, cranberries and the last hard apples. Everything now wants long heat and salt. The first citrus arrives at the very end of the month.

The dark

The clocks go back on the first Sunday and the evening collapses by an hour. This is the hardest week of the year for most people; light the house early and eat properly.

The kitchen

The month the kitchen becomes the living room. Braises, roasts, and one enormous meal that takes three days to plan and forty minutes to eat.

The rituals

Election day, Veterans Day, the drive to Thanksgiving, and the strange quiet Friday afterwards.

What to Wear Now

Warm at four in the afternoon

The real coat, again

November is when it comes back out and stays out until March.

Something at the neck

A scarf changes a coat's rating by ten degrees.

Indoor wool

The house is cooler than it was. Dress for the room, not the thermostat.
