The shortest month and the longest one. February has no harvest, no holiday worth travelling for, and weather that cannot decide — which is exactly why it is the month for indoor projects, long lunches, and the kind of cooking that takes all afternoon on purpose.

Still citrus, now at its best and cheapest. Leeks, parsnips, and storage apples that have gone soft enough to cook. Maple sap starts running in the north before the month is out.
The light
The turn is unmistakable now. Six o'clock is light again by the end of the month, and the first warm afternoon arrives about a week before anyone believes it.
The kitchen
Soup, every week, without ceremony. February is also the month to bake something difficult, because there is nowhere else to be.
The rituals
Valentine's Day, the Super Bowl, Presidents' Day, and the last real snowstorm — which always seems to fall after everyone has put the shovel away.
