Month 08 · Late Summer

August

The year's long exhale. The light turns gold and slants earlier each evening, the tomatoes finally taste like something, and everyone quietly agrees to do a little less. August asks nothing of you except that you notice it.

In Season

What the month is made of

At the market

Tomatoes, sweet corn, peaches, and too much basil. This is the month to stop cooking and start assembling: salt, olive oil, a torn loaf. Buy more than you think you need — none of it keeps, and that is the point.

The light

We lose about two minutes of daylight a day now, which is why August evenings feel borrowed. The golden hour comes earlier and lasts longer, low and amber. Eat outside while you still can.

The water

Lakes, oceans and pools are as warm as they will ever be. The Atlantic finally forgives New England. Swim in the morning before the wind picks up, or at six, when the crowds have gone home to dinner.

The rituals

County fairs, back-porch dinners, the last long weekend before school. The Perseids peak around the 12th — drive twenty minutes past the streetlights and look northeast after midnight.

What to Wear Now

Dress for the heat, plan for the evening

Worn-in cotton, nothing tight

The oldest shirts in the drawer are the right ones. Loose weaves, faded colors, sleeves you can push up.

One thing that moves

A dress or a wide-legged pant that catches the breeze. August rewards clothes that do something at 6 p.m.

The evening layer

The first cool nights arrive by month's end. Keep a linen overshirt by the door and pretend you are not surprised.
